1922 BIG SIX STUDEBAKER HEARSE FOR CHILDREN

ONE OF ONE - This is the only Studebaker Children's Hearse known in Studebaker circles to date according to Historical Studebaker Collectors.  This vehicle has been viewed and admired by many well known Studebaker-Historical car buffs.  It is the most desired vehicle in Studebaker circles.  This hearse was invited to be shown in the Henry Ford Estate, and has been in several magazines and has won countless awards.

Look closely at this Studebaker; this is truly an amazing collector's vehicle.  The leaded glass is beautiful.  The white color of the hearse symbolizes purity for the children.   Sit back and appreciate all the hard work, sweat and love that were put into this car, appreciate the historical value, along with the story behind it.  When you open the doors you will see only the finest materials were used to restore this classic.  The craftsmanship is evident throughout the hearse.

This Studebaker Hearse was bought new by Miller Funeral Home, which also owned the Studebaker dealership in Brazil, IN and was used at only one service according to Miss Miller (in 1991 she was in her 90's).  It was stored inside from 1934 until 1979, when it was bought by an attorney and parked until 1988.

The hearse is a 1922 Big Six Model E.K., engine #01358, serial #2009792; bore and stroke is 3 7/8 x 5 inches; 353.7 cubic inches; 60 hp at 2000 rpm; wheelbase is 126 inches.  The body was made by the Knightstown (Indiana) Body Company.  The whole body with the exception of the engine compartment is made of wood, with a metal skin.

When my (Mark Neitzel) parents bought this vehicle it had 4,554 miles on it, and would be the 3rd owners.

They loaded their prize onto the waiting trailer, and arrived home to find that none of the doors would open.  It sat on the trailer a week while my father tried to get the handles unstuck.  After removing the pins from the back door hinges and crawling up to the driver's compartment, he got the 2 doors open and then his work commenced.  All the wiring had to be replaced and he used old style wiring.  When he took the engine apart he found that the oil in the pan had jelled and would not run out of the drain.  The valves were all good, but the oil gears, which were pot metal, were broken.  He had new oil gears made from bronze and the motor was reassembled with new gaskets.  He cleaned and painted the pan and motor, blew out the water jackets and cleaned the radiator.  With fresh gas in the vacuum tank and a new battery, it started!!!  After about 20 miles, he found the spark plugs wet on the outside of the head.  The rings were letting the oil leak into the cylinder.  After purchasing new rings from Egge Machine and new Olson gaskets the problem was corrected.

The leaded glass stained windows are original.  They had it re-upholstered in Burgundy velvet and refinished the oak hardwood flooring in the rear.  The white body was dismantled and he discovered it was white underneath.  Everything was given a fresh coat of white paint.  The coach lights are brass and white.  New tires were installed, and a child size antique wooden casket and crystal flower vases finished off their wonderful find.

My father worked 10 hour days, 7 days a week, for 4 months before the restoration was completed.  This is truly an incredible vehicle!

1925 STUDEBAKER PHAETON

This car originated in Minnesota, and was purchased at auction in St. Charles, Missouri just before the big flood of 1993.  The car was almost complete, but needed complete restoration.  All wood was replaced.  The motor was overhauled, new leather seats were made, new soft side curtains that roll up  to the top, and hard windows for winter driving.  It was repainted red and cream with a black vinyl top.  A fancy thermometer and gear shift knob were installed.  The wood spoke wheels look excellent.  This was a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration.  Nothing was left untouched!

This Studebaker was owned and restored by David Neitzel of Mooresville, Indiana.  Mr. Neitzel was very well known and respected in the community and across the world for his restoration of Studebakers.  He was called upon domestically and internationally for technical advice.  He was a long time enthusiast, and restorer, along with being a member of the Historic Auto Club, and the Studebaker Drivers Club, Indiana chapter (served as officer for several years). His cars have been published in Turning Wheels magazine, shown at the Studebaker Museum in South Bend, Indiana, and the Henry Ford Estate in Dearborn, Michigan.

Studebaker Vehicles – Terms of Sale:  20% of the purchase price down day of auction with the balance due upon Tuesday, August 17th at 4:00 pm with certified funds.  No credit card payments shall be accepted for the vehicles or tractor.
